If you are a car enthusiast of one type or another you probably have a dream car. You probably also have a dream car that no auto maker has ever produced.
This site is about 4 wheel drive cars so it would only be appropriate to speculate as to what would be the best 4 wheel drive dream car. Who knows maybe it even exists.
When I think of what all wheel drive car I’d like best I automatically think of some of the great diesel models out there.
The unfortunate thing is that most of them are not available in the United States but of course when you are making stuff up like I’m doing here that doesn’t matter.
As it turns out a car that is very close to my ideal car -for everyday use if I were only allowed one car- actually exists and is made by Audi.
No doubt you are familiar with the Audi A8. If not, it’s a full size luxury car that the German company introduced in the 1997 model year and has continued to make up until the present day.
It was innovative at it’s introduction because of it’s aluminum construction. Most of the car was made of the material which made it pretty corrosion resistant. Today one of the A8’s innovative features is complete use of LEDs for the vehicle lighting, both headlights and taillights.
The A8 also features the quattro AWD system which is what earns it a spot in this post since the site is dedicated to 4WD cars of all types.
In the United States we have pretty much only been able to get the A8 with a few engine options. You could go with the 4.2L V8 which Audi has been updating for the past 10+ years and which is now capable of producing an impressive 372 HP in the 2012 version of the Audi A8.
You can also get the A8 with a huge 6.3L W12 engine that puts out 500 HP which is enough to get you anywhere quite fast. In fact the W12 can hit 60 MPH in 4.9 seconds.
The A8 has also been available -depending on the model year- in a sport oriented version known as the S8 with even more power and generally a lower ride height, tweaked body style and different suspension settings.
What we have never seen here in the U.S. market is a diesel powered Audi A8 although the word is that one is on it’s way. It seems more likely than ever now that Mercedes has introduced a diesel powered S Class sedan.
The unhappy thing for my dream car schemes is that the Audi A8 that does come here with a diesel power plant is not likely to be the big V8 diesel enjoyed in Europe.
For me the best 4 wheel drive car would be a new Audi A8 equipped with quattro AWD as usual and fitted with the European spec 4.2L V8 TDI engine that puts out 322 HP and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Equip that with a 6 speed manual or a VW DSG style manual shift transmission and that would be an amazing car. It would combine the roomy luxury of high end sedan with good fuel economy and massive power. I can’t wait until they make it!
